About the Author

VadimBystritski was born and raised on the shores of the Caspian Sea.  Hence, according to the precepts of the geographic fatalism, his aesthetic commitments are peninsular: the two peninsular cultures to examine are Mangyshlak, a nomadic desert, and Apsheron, the densely populated Azerbaijan.  The educational background is of some interest: Baku High #153, SU of Saratov, Pasadena City College and Cal State (Pomona).  The author’s teaching career could be viewed with amusement – presently he teaches at Berlitz.
